What is a Routing Number?

Routing numbers are 9-digit numbers that banks use to identify themselves. Think of them as the address that lets other banks know where to find your money.

You'll use your routing number for many tasks, including:

  • ACH payments
  • Setting up direct deposit
  • Receiving benefits from the government, including tax refunds
  • Transferring money between accounts at different banks or investment firms
  • Automatic bill payment
  • Domestic wire transfers

Huntington Bank has branches throughout the United States and uses different routing numbers for different regions. Keep reading to learn how to find the right one for your transactions.

Huntington savings accounts use the same routing numbers as checking accounts.

Here are several other ways to find your Huntington routing number:

Use a Check
You can find the routing number in the lower left-hand corner of the checks connected to your checking account. It's the 9 digits located at the bottom left. Your account number is the series of numbers right beside the routing number.

Go Online
Log into your Huntington account portal online. Find the Account Details page. The right side of the screen will list your routing number and account number.

If you are using the Huntington bank mobile app, select your account after you have logged into the app. From there, select the Summary tab to view your routing number and account number.

If you don't have access to the bank app or online banking, you can also find your account number in the top right of the right column of a bank statement.

Call Customer Service
If you don't have online checking or a check handy, call Huntington customer service at (800) 480-2265, available between 6 a.m. and midnight ET daily. After you provide a few details to identify yourself, a representative will be able to guide you to locate your account information.

You'll use a different routing number for certain types of transactions. Keep reading to learn more.

Breaking down your routing number
The first four digits pertain to the Federal Reserve. The next four digits are unique to your bank. Consider those the bank's address for the Federal Reserve. The final digit is a mathematical calculation of the first eight digits—it's used to prevent check fraud.

Domestic/International Wire Transfers

Wire transfers are a faster way to send money than an ACH transfer. But they typically cost a fee and you'll use different routing numbers.

To Make A Domestic Wire Transfer
Use the Huntington domestic wire transfer routing number 044000024 instead of your regular ABA routing number.

You'll also need the following information:

  • The name of the person to whom you're wiring funds (the "beneficiary") as it appears on their account
  • The name and address of the beneficiary's bank
  • The routing number of the beneficiary's bank
  • The beneficiary's account number

You'll need to visit a branch to wire funds with a personal Huntington bank account. There, a bank representative will help you coordinate your wire transfer.

If you have a Huntington business account, you may be able to initiate a wire transfer online using the International Wire Transfer feature.

To Make Any International Wire Transfer
Use the Huntington SWIFT code HUNTUS33.

SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) codes are the international equivalents of U.S. routing numbers. They direct the money to the correct bank for international transfers.

You'll also need the following for an international wire transfer:

  • The name of the person to whom you're wiring funds ("the beneficiary") as it appears on their account
  • The name and address of the beneficiary's bank
  • The beneficiary's account number
  • The SWIFT code of your bank and the bank you are sending to
  • Currency being sent
  • Purpose of payment

Before submitting a wire transfer for processing, it's a good idea to double-check if you have correctly entered all the necessary information.

Huntington Wire Transfer Fees
Internal Wire Transfer (between Huntington bank accounts): $10
Incoming Domestic Wire: $15
Outgoing Domestic Wire: $25
Incoming International Wire: $15
Outgoing International Wire: $75

Which Huntington Routing Number Should You Use?

For any domestic money transfer activity, use the ABA routing number associated with the third and fourth digits of your Huntington bank account from the list above.

  • For any domestic wire transfers, use the Huntington domestic wire transfer routing number 044000024.
  • For international wire transfers (meaning a wire transfer to or from an account located outside the United States), use Huntington SWIFT code HUNTUS33.

Is There a Routing Number on Your Debit or Credit Card?
Although your debit card is associated with a bank account, you do not use a routing number for debit card transactions. Routing numbers are only used for transfers directly between bank accounts.

Likewise, credit cards do not have routing numbers since they are not directly linked to any bank account. When you pay your credit card online, you may need to use your bank account routing number to set up the link between your credit card account and checking account, like you would for any other bill.

Bottom Line

You'll likely need your Huntington routing number when managing your finances. Keep it handy should you need to set up a direct deposit, automatic payment, or wire transfer.
