Adoptions

We adopt to Connecticut residents only.
Preference is given to adopters in New Haven County.

Our adoption process:

  1. CompletE the adoption screening form (below).

    • We receive many adoption requests, and it may take up to 14 days for a volunteer to respond to your application once it has been received. If your application is to be considered, we will contact you within 2 weeks.

    • At that time we will ask you to call your current veterinarian to provide permission for us to speak to them about your previous pet(s).

    • Please note that if we do not contact you within 2 weeks, your application will not be considered.

  2. What to expect if you are contacted (after pre-screening):

    • GNHCP will contact you via email or telephone to set up an appointment to meet foster cats or kittens.

    • Cat or kittens are typically not adopted at the first appointment. This is to ensure you find the right match or to enable GNHCP to schedule a brief veterinary appointment if the cat has been in foster care longer than 6 months.

    • If you find your perfect feline match, you will be required to pay an adoption fee of $225 (for both adult cats and kittens) to help defray the costs for vaccination and spay/neuter expenses. This adoption fee must be paid in full at the time of adoption. There is no flexibility in this arrangement. The adoption fee is the fee required for each cat or kitten.

  3. Adoption requirements:

    • If you do not own your residence, you must be in your current residence for a minimum of 9 months.

      • If you are contacted for an adoption appointment, you must bring a copy of your lease demonstrating permission to have a pet(s) and the originating lease date.

    • If you are a graduate student, you must have moved to New Haven with a companion animal in order for your application to be considered.

    • Kittens are adopted in pairs, unless you have another companion animal. Other requirements will be discussed with you during your appointment.

    • GNHCP likes to meet everyone in the household, including children.

We appreciate your understanding of our policies and procedures. If you do not meet the requirements listed above, please try other organizations/shelters. If you do not adopt from GNHCP, we can still connect you with low-cost veterinary services to ensure your new pet is spayed/neutered.

Meet all of our current fosters!

This list is kept up-to-date; if you no longer see a cat on this list, that means they are no longer available for adoption.

The cats and kittens featured on this page residE in foster homes or at the GNHCP Center. once your adoption application is approved, we will contact you to set up an appointment.

She is very energetic and playful, and especially loves to play with wand toys and to chase springs. But when she's all tuckered out from play, she is an absolute snuggle bug and loves to curl up in a lap or to be carried around while she gets pets. She would do well in a home with playmates -- either friendly cats or cat-savvy kids. She is very assertive and confident, and ever curious.

Birth Year: 2023

Dixie

Dixie is a young adult female who was abandoned in Hamden. She was pregnant when she was rescued, and had one kitten, Pixie.

Dixie can get overwhelmed by noise and lots of other people or cats -- she would do best in a home where she is the only pet, and in a quiet house without children or a lot of activity. That said, she is very curious and wants to be where her people are. She will follow you around to watch what you're doing and will always want to be involved.

Do not leave Dixie unsupervised with drinks or breakables on tables -- she loves to knock things off of counters and watch them fall!

Birth Year: 2023

Eliza

Eliza is a sweet young adult who loves being petted, and enjoys lots of playtime with her sister. Sheenjoys napping in the sunshine, and keeping an eye on the neighborhood while bird watching through the window! Ellamae is here to make her debut! Ellamae is shy at first but once she gets to know you, she will go back and forth looking to be pet. She is very curious, and loves to be a part of everything that’s going on around her. She especially loves playtime with her sister Eliza who she would love find a forever home with!

Birth Year: 2022

Brie

Brie is a young adult female rescued from New Haven after she was abandoned by her owners. She is incredibly sweet, friendly, and curious.

Birth Year: 2022

Tutti

Tutti is a young dilute tortie rescued from New Haven. She is very sweet and independent, and loves to snooze and get pets.

Birth Year: 2022

Bobby

What about Bobby? Well first off, he's an adorable tuxedo who likes to give kisses. Second, even though he has some visual impairments that cause him to see a bit blurry, he's as happy as can be. He and his brother, Trevor, were rescued together from a feral colony. They love to play and chase each other around, but they will also snuggle up together for a nice nap. They can be shy with new people, but warm up quickly and love pets and snuggles. The two are a bonded pair and would do best if they were adopted together.

Birth Year: 2021

Trevor

What's black and white and cute all over? Why, it's Trevor! This young tux may seem a bit shy at first, but once he gets to know you, he'll happily accept pets in exchange for purrs. He likes playing with toys and with his brother, Bobby. He is a little intimidated by other cats, so he would do best if he were adopted with his brother Bobby into a household without other pets. He and Bobby are both very gentle, so they would do well with children, but because they can be shy it is very important that children understand their boundaries and are equally gentle with them. Give Trevor and Bobby a try!

Birth Year: 2021

Ivan

You've heard of "Ivan the terrible?" Meet Ivan the "terribly cute." This handsome young adult male was rescued in New Haven. While he is a little shy and unsure of people at first, once he gets to know you, he’s a friendly boy and the gentlest cat you will ever meet. He’s very curious and loves to explore until he finds the best nook for napping in, whether it’s on a cat tree or in a laundry basket! He would make a great companion for another playful cat. He has had a full mouth extraction due to prior dental issues, so he has no teeth, but that doesn’t get in his way — he eats regular cat food, including kibble.

Birth Year: 2021

Saffron

Donovan was right. We're just mad about Saffron! And with her beautiful blue eyes, white fur with grey patches, & cute little pink nose & toe beans, it's easy to see why. This young adult female was abandoned in New Haven. We'd love to find a ˆ"mellow yellow" home for her.

Saffron needs to be the only pet in the house. She is incredibly sweet and snuggly with humans, but she has no tolerance for other cats. At our center she’s known for her spicy personality anytime one of the other cats gets close, but as soon as you sit down she’ll climb into your lap and purr happily while she gets pets and snuggles. She gets morning zoomies and loves to play, and one of her favorite things is to drink water from the tap — she will sit by the sink and wait for you to turn the water on for her! As snuggly as she is, she is also very independent, so she’ll do just fine on her own while her humans go to work.

Add a little spice and lots of love to your life, and give Saffron the safe, happy home she deserves.

Birth Year: 2021

Aziza

Meet Aziza! This beautiful adult female has been through a lot, but she’s ready to find her new home and thrive. She loves making biscuits in her cat bed and playing with the laser pointer, and she’s very smart — she sees everything with her big eyes. Sometimes she likes to eat and drink with her paws. Her foster mom thinks she’d use a straw and fork if only she had opposable thumbs! She isn’t a lap cat (yet) but she will curl up next to you. She is very independent, and will communicate her boundaries when she needs some space, so she would do best in a home without small children, or with kids who are very cat-savvy.

Birth Year: 2020

Jesse

Sweet Jesse was left in a box on someone's porch in New Haven. But he doesn't let that tough situation hold him back. This adult male is looking for a home that will keep him safe and comfortable, with people who will love him forever. He is very sweet and independent, and would probably do best in a quiet home without a lot of activity. While he gets along with some of the other foster cats, he mostly prefers the company of humans or being by himself. He likes to play and loves to stretch out on his back and show off his belly!

Birth Year: 2019

AJ

AJ had a family for several years, but he came to us after they no longer had room for him. He doesn't let that get him down, though. He's friendly, playful, loving, and ready to trust whoever will make his next home his forever home. While he is shy around other cats, he loves to explore and play when he’s given his own space. He goes absolutely nuts for catnip, and even though he’s a big boy, he has a very soft little voice. He'd do best in a quiet environment without a lot of activity. Give this sweet adult male a shot.

Birth Year: 2017

Sabrina

Sabrina is a senior cat who was rescued from a basem*nt in New Haven after her owners abandoned her. She is incredibly sweet, gentle, and full of love!
